Chandra Brown Receives Top OVC Honors

Dec. 22, 2003

Brentwood, Tenn. - Junior college transfer, Chandra Brown, receives the week's top honors for Ohio Valley Conference women's hoops. As announced by the league office today, Brown was named OVC Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 22. Brown has now received OVC honors all three weeks the Otahkians have competed this season.

The 6-3 junior, center from Louisville, Ky. is a two-time recipient of the OVC Newcomer of the Week award this season, as she claimed the award for the weeks of Nov. 25 and Dec. 8.

This week she receives player of the week honors after playing to back-to-back, career-best performances last week. Against Northern Illinois on Dec. 15, Brown led the squad in scoring and rebounding, posting 15 points and a personal-best 16 boards. These impressive marks, earned Brown her first career double-double among the ranks of Division I competition. Brown's late two-point jumper regained a one-point lead for Southeast and turned out to be the game-winning points. Brown is also proving herself as an outside threat has she shot and sank her second three-point shot to give her a perfect 100 percent mark on the season. On the night, she also came up big on the defensive side, making three steals and blocking one Huskie shot. Her efforts earned her Copi-Rite player of the game awards.

Brown came up with another outstanding performance against Lipscomb on Dec. 20, but it wasn't enough to give the Otahkians the win. She recorded her second career double-double, scoring the game-high and her career-best, 20 points, while also bringing down a game-high 14 rebounds. In the second half, Brown scored 13 of the squads 17 points as she closed out the game being the only Otahkian to score more than one bucket from the floor. Brown shot 53 percent from the floor on the evening (9-of-17), while the team as a whole shot 28.3 percent.

With her impressive performances last week, it's no surprise that is she leading the way for the squad on the season. Brown is setting the pace for the Otahks with 102 points on the season, 12.8 per game. She is also dominating on the glass, as she is pulling down 8.1 rebounds per game. Brown is also averaging 1.3 blocks per game, more than the entire Otahkian squad averaged per game as a team last season.

Brown and the Otahkians will be in action tomorrow night, Dec. 23, as they take on in-state rival SMS. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
