Otahks Take Season-Opener Over Centenary

Shreveport, La. (January 12, 2003) - Junior Ashley Godwin won the all-around and sophomore Alexis Traylor won the floor exercise as the Southeast Missouri State Otahkian gymnastics squad defeated Centenary College today, 188.575 to 187.925.

This was the first meet for both schools and marks the third victory in a row for Southeast over Centenary. Centenary held just a half of a point advantage going into the floor, but three 8's on the event sealed their fate as they lost to the Otahkians.

Centenary won three out of the five individual titles, but couldn't overcome the consistent scoring of Southeast. Godwin placed in the top three in all four events and outpaced senior teammate Amy Cole to win the all-around title. Godwin had a 9.600 for second on the vault, a 9.800 for second on the bars, a 9.600 for third on the beam, and a 9.775 for second on the floor.

Traylor won the floor exercise with a score of 9.800 for her first individual title of her early career. Sophomore Katie Bloom finished with a 9.450 on the vault, good for a third place finish in the event. Godwin had an all-around score of 38.775 as Cole tallied a mark of 37.675. Centenary's Kaela Meinert had a 37.050 for third place. First year athlete Tara Boldt had a 36.850 in her first collegiate meet.

Southeast moves to 1-0 on the season and now will come home next Sunday to take on the Redbirds of Illinois State University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Houck Field House.
