Gymnastics Kick-off Season with Victory Over Redbirds
Jan. 15, 2005 BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - (Saturday, January 15, 2005) The Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team knew going into their 2005 opener against conference rival Illinois State that they had big expectations after last year's record-breaking season. They started on the right foot by defeating the Redbirds 187.225 to 185.300 Saturday night in the Horton Field House in Bloomington, Ill. The victory by Southeast (1-0) over Illinois State (0-3) was the sixth straight win over the Redbirds dating back to the 2003 season. The win also extends Southeast's winning streak in duals to four-straight. It also the third-straight season Southeast has opened the season with a victory. Southeast started the meet sweeping the top-three spots on the vault. Brystol Powelski (Franklin, Wis./ Salto Gymnastics) won with a score of 9.700. Tara Boldt (Lakeville, Minn./ T.A.G.S) scored a 9.625 and freshman Jennifer Kaye (Brookfield, Wis./ Salto Gymnastics) scored 9.575 to finish second and third respectively. Freshman Danyelle Aber (Gurnee, Ill./ Ultimate Gymnastics) finished in fifth with a 9.425.
On the bars freshman Mindi Lineweber (Lincoln, Neb./ N.S.G.) took the crown with a 9.550. Powelski followed her strong vault with a second-place showing with a 9.500. Katie Bloom (Snellvile, Ga./ Gwinnett Gymnastics Center) and Natalie Watts (Pasco, Wash./ Mid Columbia Gymnastics Academy) finished fourth and fifth. The Redbirds struck back with a first-place on the beam with Megan Goetting taking the title with a 9.525. Southeast still managed to take second and third with Boldt scoring a 9.450 and Bloom scoring 9.400. The Redbirds then split the events by winning the floor routine. Tove Fjordham and Goetting tied with a winning score of 9.650. Boldt finished third with a score of 9.625. Powelski scored a career-high 9.600 to finish fourth. Watts also recorded a career-high with a 9.575 and finished fifth. Despite splitting the four events, it was Southeast's consistency throughout all the events that proved to be the deciding factor. Southeast took the top two spots. Powelski and Boldt tied to win the all-around crown with a score of 37.750. For Powelski that score set a new career-high. Bloom took second with a score of 37.000. Southeast will return home to the Houck Field House on Saturday, January 22 at 4:00 P.M. Southeast will host Centenary College and look to extend their home winning streak to eight dual victories. The meet will be hosted by the Farmington Creative Art Center and the theme of the meet will be Girl Power. |
