Southeast Gymnasts Win Season Opener

St. Paul, Minn. - The Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team opened up its 2004 season in dominating fashion Saturday afternoon, as they earned first place at the Hamline Quadrangular Meet.

The Otahkians won all four events as a team, and finished with a total team score of 185.075. Behind Southeast, Hamline University finished second at 178.475, Winona State third with 176.000, and Wisconsin-Whitewater finished in fourth with 169.750.

Southeast senior Ashley Godwin edged out teammate Tara Boldt for the all-around title. Godwin won the bars and floor events, and finished with an all-around score of 37.700. Boldt, a sophomore, ran away with the beam competition as she scored a 9.800, and was second on bars and floor, finishing with a total score of 37.675.
 

 

Godwin won the bars with a 9.575 score, and took the floor exercise with a 9.825.

Junior Katie Bloom had a strong all-around score, finishing third at 36.625. Bloom won the vault event with a 9.450, and was fourth on bars with a 9.025.

Southeast swept the top five scores on the uneven parallel bars, as they posted a team score of 45.975, more than two and a half full points ahead of the next team.

Newcomers Natalie Watts and Lily Le performed well in their first collegiate meet. Watts, of Pasco, Wash., finished third in the bars competition with a score of 9.275. Watts also had a 9.100 on floor as an exhibition performance.

Le finished third on vault with a 9.100. She also had an 8.900 on floor and a 9.300 exhibition score on beam.

Southeast will now come home for its first home meet. The Otahkians will take on Bowling Green this Friday, Jan. 23, at 7:00 p.m. at Houck Field House.
