Redhawks Finish 2nd in Texas Woman's University Quad Meet

DENTON, Texas. - (Saturday, February 25, 2006) After two meets in which the Redhawks gymnastics team averaged 190.763 they responded with their best point output of the season with a score of 193.050 to finish 2nd behind Big Ten power Iowa (194.275) at the Texas Woman's University Quadrangular Meet in Denton, Texas. The Redhawks finished ahead of Midwest Independent Conference rival and host Texas Woman's (191.225) and Wisconsin-La Crosse (183.500).

The Redhawks (6-4, 2-2 MIC) were propelled to their season-high score thanks in part to a season-high score of 48.375 on the vault to kick-off the meet. That score set the table as the Redhawks would score 48.000 or higher on all four events.

Chelsea Unold (Plymouth, Minn./Twin City Twisters) led four Redhawks who scored 9.600 or higher on the vault. Unold set a new season-high with a score of 9.750 which placed her tied for third. Junior Brystol Powelski (Franklin, Wis./ Salto Gymnastics) also set a new season-high with a score of 9.725 for a fifth place finish.

On the bars the Redhawks again showed why they rank nationally on the apparatus as they scored their highest score of the meet with a combined score of 48.525. Freshman Maureen Grimaldi (Kansas City, Mo./Eagles) earned the Redhawks lone individual title as she finished first with a season-high 9.850, a score that just misses ranking in the school's top-10. Danyelle Aber (Gurnee, Ill./ Ultimate Gymnastics) and freshman Sandra Blake (Tri-Cities, Wash./Mid-Columbia) finished tied for fourth with scores of 9.750.

On the beam freshman Starlyn Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla./First City) continued to show improvement as she finished tied for second place with a season-high 9.800. Aber was solid again as she finished fifth with a new career-high 9.775.

Aber made it two-straight events with new career-highs as she set another mark on the floor with a score of 9.725 to finish fourth. Grimaldi finished tied for fifth with a score of 9.675.

Thanks to the two new career-highs, Aber recorded her first all-around title as she finished with a combined score of 38.875 to set yet another career-high. Powelski tied a career-high with a score of 38.450 to finish third. Blake finished fourth (38.800) and Alison Ezell (Kansas City, Kan./ Alpha Omega) followed her with a fifth place finish (37.875).

The Redhawks return home to host the Outback Steakhouse Invitational at the Show Me Center on Sunday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. Top-10 power Missouri, MIC foe Centenary and Ball State will be competing at the prestigious event.
