Intrasquad Meet Showcases Talented Gymnastics Team

Dec. 4, 2003

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Tonight's Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics intrasquad meet was perhaps a glimpse of what's to come in the future for the Southeast program--both this season, as well as in the upcoming years.

In Thursday night's matchup, the Southeast squad split into two teams-Black and Silver. The Silver team won it 149.850 to 146.95. However, both teams impressed the overflowing crowd at Parker Hall Gymnasium.

Outstanding performances were given by junior Katie Bloom, sophomore Tara Boldt, and freshmen Brystol Powelski and Natalie Watts. Boldt had the best All-Around performance by finishing with a score of 38.450, winning two of the four events, and scoring no less than a 9.5 on any event.

Powelski awed the crowd with an outstanding performance on the uneven bars, in which she scored a 9.75. Later, Boldt won the vault by drawing a strong 9.6 score from the judge.

During the third rotation, both Boldt and Powelski scored impressive 9.7's on their floor routine, but the last performer of the night, senior Ashley Godwin, took the event with a 9.75 from the judges.

The strong All-Around performances by the squad's youth should give Otahkian fans a taste of what's to come in the near future. Along with Godwin, Southeast's record holder in the All-Around category, the Southeast squad should be able to make a splash during this year's regular season.

Southeast will compete in its first meet Jan. 16 at Winona State. The following week, the Otahkians will have their first home meet on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at Houck Field House against Bowling Green.
