Southeast Gymnastics to Compete in Season Opener

Jan. 16, 2004

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team is ready to go.

"In my five years here, this team is more prepared than any other team we've had," said head coach Tom Farden. "We are very much looking forward to getting the season started."

That's what the Southeast squad will do tomorrow, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at Hamline University, in St. Paul, Minn. The Otahkians will travel there to open their season in a tri-meet against Hamline and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Originally, the team was supposed to open up the season at Winona State, but that meet was canceled earlier this week. Nevertheless, the Southeast squad is ready to go.

Several performers return from last year's squad that scored the third-highest point total in school history. Senior Ashley Godwin made headlines last year, as she became Southeast's all-time leader in the all-around event. She also broke the all-time school record on balance beam, and sophomore Tara Boldt holds second place all-time in that event.

Overall, the team finished ninth regionally, and ranked higher than schools such as Illinois and Illinois State.

Along with several returnees from last year's squad, four freshmen will be joining the team. Brystol Powelski, Lexie Hein, Lily Le, and Natalie Watts are all strong performers, and show great promise towards becoming key members on this year's team. Powelski, who was having great preseason workouts, was recently injured in a car accident. She is expected to be back in competition later in the season.

Southeast fans will get their first look at the team at home on Jan 23 in the Houck Field House. The home opener will be against Bowling Green at 7:00 that night.
