Gymnastics Travel To Western Michigan

Feb. 13, 2003

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (February, 13, 2003)- The Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics squad (6-4) travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan this Sunday to compete in a triangular meet versus Western Michigan University (0-5, 0-3 MAC) and Ball State (8-7).

The Otahkians are coming off an electrifying victory over Big Ten conference University of Illinois by a score of 194.375-192.425. Southeast is now 45th in the nation with a total season average of 192.080. The Otahkians score of 194.375 is their highest so far this season and seventh best score in team history.

"It was very gratifying to see the team perform like they did on Saturday," said head coach Patty Stotzheim. "I have believed since our training started in September that this team has a tremendous amount of potential."

Otahkian junior Ashley Godwin is currently ranked in the top ten on floor and uneven parallel bars within the 12 team South Central Region. The South Central Region is home to a handful of proven gymnastics programs from the University of Nebraska, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, University of Arkansas and the University of Missouri. "I hope our focus can stay on the total team effort that will be needed to qualify to Regionals," said Stotzheim.

The Broncos of Western Michigan University are coming off a season best team total of 193.000 last Sunday when they hosted the Bronco Triangular featuring Central Michigan and Illinois State. They performed strong on beam marking a total score of 49.025. Junior Laura Ransing is coming off scores of 9.775 on the uneven parallel bars and a individual and team season high score of 9.850 on the balance beam. The Broncos are currently 50th in the nation with a total team average of 191.145.

The Cardinals of Ball State suffered a defeat last Saturday to Ohio State by a score of 195.500-192.875. Cardinal gymnast Quiana Williams won the all-around with a score of 39.100. The Cardinals are currently 47th in the nation with a total team average of 191.890.

"I'm excited to keep our momentum rolling," said Stotzheim. "It will be another boost to our confidence if we can come away with a win against Ball State and Western Michigan both."
