Southeast Gymnastics Are Set For The Corvette Classic

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (February 25, 2003)- The Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics squad (7-5) travels to Columbia to compete in the ninth annual Corvette Classic on Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m., at the Hearnes Center. The Otahkians will compete versus the University of Missouri (6-5, 1-2 Big 12), Eastern Michigan (3-6, 1-2 MAC) and Texas Woman's University (3-11).
The Otahkians are coming off a second place finish at the Bronco Triangular on February 16 with a score of 193.475. The host Western Michigan won with a score of 194.325 and Ball State posted a 192.725 placing third. Southeast is currently ranked 46th nationally and 11th in the South Central Region with an overall team average of 192.312.
"I think we can come through with a strong performance this weekend," said Southeast head coach Patty Stotzheim. "We're coming into the phase of the season where we are focusing on loading and tapering at just the right times in order to have peak performances for every meet we have left."
Southeast junior Ashley Godwin's consistency is ranking her top in the nation in the all-around and floor exercise events. Godwin's credentials include a current standing of 49th in the nation as all-arounder with an average score of 38.725 and 55th in the nation in the floor exercise with an average score of 9.846.
"In order for us to move up in the rankings, we're going to need top performances from every member this team at every remaining meet," said Stotzheim.
The Tigers of the University of Missouri performed last versus the University of Oklahoma losing 195.350-194.150. Mizzou is currently 27th in the nation and fifth in the South Central Region with a overall total average score of 194.439.
The Pioneers of the Texas Woman's University gymnastics squad finished with a team score of 190.225, which placed them last in the quad meet behind the University of Maryland (195.825), Towson University (195.400) and James Madison University (190.600) on February 22. The Pioneers are currently 50th in the nation and 12th in the South Central Region with an overall average total score of 190.864.
The Eagles of Eastern Michigan University lost to Western Michigan 192.500-190.000 on February 23. The Eagles are currently 48th in the nation and 11th in the Central Region with an overall total average score of 192.046.
The NCAA Regionals will be held at the University of Missouri-Columbia on April 12, 2003.
