Southeast Gymnastics to take on No. 20 Arkansas

March 3, 2004

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - After finishing the home portion of the 2004 schedule a perfect 5-0 at Houck Field House, the Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team will head on the road Friday to take on No. 20 Arkansas at the Gym'Back Invitational at 7 p.m. The Quadrangular meet will also feature Centenary, which Southeast already beat this season, and Texas Women's University.

The matchup is the first of two road meets for Southeast before moving on to postseason action later this month. The Otahks are coming off three straight wins at home over Centenary, Wisconsin - La Crosse and Illinois State. Southeast topped ISU just this Sunday with a team score of 194.850 -- eighth best in school history. The win improved Southeast's overall record to 10-2 on the season.

In Fayetteville, Ark., the Otahks will square off against one of the top teams in the nation. The 20th-ranked Gym'Backs are only 5-5 overall this season, but are members of the strong Southeastern Conference. Arkansas owns a Regional Qualifying Score of 196.190 thus far.

The Gym'Backs are coming off a loss to No. 3 Alabama last weekend. Arkansas was swept on all four events, however posted a 196.450 team score in the contest. Melissa Leigh tied for first on bars with a 9.875.

Southeast, which has won five straight matchups, has scored a team score of 194 or better in six meets this year. In doing so, the Otahks have nearly re-written the Southeast gymnastics record books. The 2004 squad owns three of the top eight overall team scores in school history, and has reached the Top Ten at least once in every category in the history books.
