Gymnastics Travel To Lexington, Kentucky

March 11, 2003

Cape Girardeau, Mo. (March 11, 2003)- The Southeast Missouri State University gymnastics squad (5-8) travels to Lexington, Ky., on March 14, to compete versus the University of Kentucky and Denver University at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Otahkians are coming off a victory over Eastern Michigan posting their second highest overall team score of the year with a mark of 193.975.

The Otahkians consistency at home will hopefully follow them to Kentucky as they visit Memorial Coliseum for the UK GymKats senior night. The Otahkians set the second highest historical mark on the uneven bars with a team score of 48.850 versus Eastern Michigan on March 5. Southeast is currently ranked 52nd nationally and 11th in the South Central Region with an overall team average score of 192.469.

"At this point in the season, we are hoping to maintain our routines; there won't be any new skills being debuted for the rest of the season," says Southeast head coach Patty Stotzheim.

The Denver University Pioneers are coming off a second place finish at the Oregon State Shannico Inn-vitational with a overall team score of 194.150. The Pioneers are currently 13th in the nation with a overall total team average score of 195.447. The Pioneers are led by senior Michelle Kasuga and junior Ashley Shible.

The University of Kentucky GymKats are coming off a battle versus the third ranked team in the nation, the University of Alabama, on March 8. The GymKats were leading the defending national champion Crimson Tide at the end of three rotations, but Alabama pulled out a 49.600 on the floor exercise bringing their final score to 196.475 to Kentucky's score of 195.125. The GymKats finished with all three all-arounders scoring above 39.250, led by senior Julia Gore's 39.325. UK is currently ranked 44th nationally with a total team average score of 193.612

"I am looking forward to seeing some high level of competition and competing in a forum that meets the standard for SEC athletics," says Stotzheim.
