Gymnastics to Compete Against Top-Notch Competition

March 12, 2004

The old adage "you have to play the best to beat the best" is a fitting motto for the 2004 Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team. Last week, the squad traveled to Fayettevill, Ark., to participate in the Gym'Back Invitational, and finished second-behind only No 20 Arkansas. This weekend, the Otahkians head to Ypsilanti, Mich., to square off against Michigan State, Ohio State, as well as host Eastern Michigan.

Michigan State and Ohio State are currently ranked 24 and 33, respectively, while Southeast is now .29 away from qualifying for Regionals as a team.

"We are looking forward to a great weekend of competition," said head coach Tom Farden.

The squad is coming off a team score of 194.625 last week at Arkansas - their fourth highest score of the season. After Saturday's meet at Eastern Michigan, the Otahkians will have only one more meet - the Midwest Independent Championships - to improve their qualifying score for Regional competition. Southeast is currently ranked No. 1 in the MIC.

Saturday's meet in Ypsilanti was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but has since been moved up to 4 p.m.
