Otahkians Travel to MIC's with High Hopes

March 19, 2004

Normal, Ill. - If history truly repeats itself, then the Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team should put on quite a show at this year's Midwest Independent Conference Championships.

Last year, the 2003 squad had its highest team total of the season with a 195.350 score. At the meet the squad broke the Southeast balance beam score and then-junior Ashley Godwin broke the school record in the beam as well as the all-around. Godwin, now a senior, has since placed herself atop the record books in the bars and floor events, and will get a chance to defend her MIC all-around crown.

This year's team has already placed itself in the school record books on numerous occasions, and a strong performance at the MIC's could qualify them for Regionals at the University of Arizona. Southeast has been at or neat the top of the MIC rankings all year long. Most recently, the University of Illinois-Chicago jumped ahead in the standings by one-tenth of a point with its performance on Wednesday.

Southeast has continued to improve its scores this season. After averaging a 194.695 team score at home meets, Southeast has recently taken on some of the strongest teams in the nation. The Otahks finished second out of four at Arkansas, scoring a 194.625. Last week, Southeast scored a 194.150 at Eastern Michigan.

The Otahks currently have a Regional Qualifying Score of 194.590 and a good performance at the MIC's could put them over the hump and into Regionals on April 3.

Southeast will compete tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Illinois State in Normal, Ill.
