Redhawks Eye Midwest Independent Conference Championship

March 28, 2007

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (Wednesday, March 28, 2007) Southeast (15-7, 9-1 MIC) will travel to Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, March 31 at 5:00 p.m., to compete in the MIC Championships. All MIC teams will be in attendance, including the University of Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State University, Texas Woman's University and Centenary University.

The Redhawks are currently second in the MIC as they have acquired an outstanding RQS of 193.49 and eye a conference championship and a South Central Regional berth. The Redhawks have a legitimate shot at making the regional because of their excellent performance this season.

Leading the way for the Redhawks is three-time MIC Gymnast of the Week, Rikara Turner (Hastings, Minn./Twin City Twisters). Turner has won individual titles on vault and beam this season as well as capturing four all-around titles. Freshman Bryanna Wong (Parkville, Mo./Edge Gymnastics) has also come on strong to help the Redhawks, especially after Sophomore Sandra Blake (Tri-Cities, Wash./Mid-Columbia) had to miss a couple weeks from an injury. Wong has completed the all-around for the Redhawks the majority of the season and has a high score less than two tenths away from Turner. The Redhawks, as a whole, are in top form and ready to fight for the championship title.

All MIC teams will be bringing their "A" games to this event as it is their last chance to show their regional worth. The defending champion is Texas Woman's but the hosting team, UIC, currently holds first in the MIC with an RQS of 193.955.
