Four Southeast Gymnasts Head to Regionals
April 2, 2004
Tucson, Ariz. - After sending just one member of the 2003 gymnastics team to Regionals last year, the 2004 squad will represent Southeast by sending four team members to Tucson, Ariz., to compete against some of the nation's best collegiate gymnasts.
"I'm very pleased to have four individuals qualify for Regionals," said head coach Tom Farden. "We are looking forward to the high level of competition we'll see in Arizona."
Senior Ashley Godwin, who was the lone qualifier for Regionals last year, will head the Southeast quartet this year. She missed qualifying for Nationals in last year's competition by just .075.
"Ashley has a legitimate chance to make it to Nationals this year," Farden said.
Godwin will compete in the all-around competition, as will sophomore Tara Boldt. Junior Alexis Traylor will compete on the floor exercise and junior Katie Bloom will make the trip as an alternate on all-around.
"It's a good sign to improve from sending one athlete to four this year," Farden said. "The team's getting stronger and stronger and this group is making a serious run at becoming a real competitor."
The South Central Region, of which Southeast is a member, boasts some of the top teams in the country.
"We'll get a chance to see some of the best teams out there," Farden said.
Of the South Central teams, Southeast is sending the most individual competitors. The Otahkian squad missed qualifying as an entire team by four-tenths of a point.
The NCAA Nationals will be held April 15 at UCLA.
