Cape Girardeau, Mo. (March 25, 2002) - Senior Michelle Walker and sophomore Ashley Godwin have both qualified for the South Central Regional Gymnastics Championships in Tempe, Arizona this Saturday. The event is being hosted by Arizona State University.

Southeast is coming off the Midwest Independent Championships finishing third in the final standings behind UIC, Illinois State, but finish ahead of Centenary and Winona State. The Otahks had a team score of 193.875, their best of the season, and just .075 away from a top-10 score in school history. The Otahks had team scores of 48.250 on vault, 48.600 on bars, 48.800 on beam, and 48.225 on the floor. The beam score was the fourth-best in school history, while the bars score was the eighth-best.

Leading Southeast was its sophomore superstar, Ashley Godwin. Godwin finished second in the All-Around with a score of 39.275, her all-time best, and also the third-best all-around score in school history. She finished tied for first in the beam with a 9.900, which is the second-best score on that event in school history. She also finished third on the vault with a score of 9.750.

Other strong scores for the Otahks included a 38.925 in the all-around for Amy Cole, her career-best score. That score was enough for fourth place in the all-around competition. Elenor Wilson and Stephanie Furman had a 9.800 on the beam, as well as Jessica Bagwill recording a 9.775 on the bars in her final competition of her career.

Next up for the Otahks will be the South Central Regional Championships in Tempe, Arizona. Sophomore Ashley Godwin will qualify as an all-arounder. She had a regional qualifying score of 38.815, and was the third qualifier of five that each region allows. She will be joined by Ashley Williams of Illinois, Luci Romberg of Texas Woman's University, Kristina Campos of Northern Illinois University, and Jana Gallagher of Illinois. Amy Cole will be the first alternate in the competition should any of the competitors not make the meet.

Senior Michelle Walker will be representing the region in the Floor Exercise. She had the highest regional qualifying score (9.830) of any athlete not competing as part of a team or in the all-around.
