Otahkian Gymnast Prepares For NCAA Regionals

April 10, 2003

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (April 10, 2003)- Southeast Missouri State University gymnast Ashley Godwin is heading to the University of Missouri-Columbia, on Saturday, April 12 for her second straight stint at the NCAA Regionals.

Godwin is coming off a stellar performance at the Midwest Independent Championships posting the Otahkian all-around record with a score of 39.550. Godwin also captured an Otahkian record on beam posting a first-place score of 9.975. Godwin's championship performances also included a first-place on the floor exercise with a 9.900, a fourth place on the vault with a 9.850, and a tie for eighth place on the bars with a score of 9.825.

"She's peaking at the right time and has done all we need to do to be prepared for this meet," said head coach Patty Stotzheim. "Knowing the level of competition is so high, Ashley will just need to find her own rhythm, stay comfortable with the surroundings, and just enjoy the atmosphere."

The teams that will be present at the meet include: UCLA, Iowa, Oregon State, Mizzou, Arizona and University of Illinois-Chicago. UCLA is currently the number one team in the nation with a regional qualifying team average score of 197.980.

"She will be rotating with Mizzou, which is a positive because she's familiar with those athletes and the coaches are great," said Stotzheim. "They will make her feel welcome and comfortable."

The top two teams will qualify for Nationals along with the top two all-arounders not competing for the advancing teams. The event champions will also advance to Nationals if they are not already associated with the advancing teams.

The National Championships will be hosted by the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, on April 24-26.
