CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - It's been no secret that the Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team has their minds set on a 2005 season in which they expect big things on and off the mat. The team has gotten a head-start off the mat by setting an example for all Southeast athletic teams in giving back to the local community.

Assistant gymnastics coach Andree' Pickens has been a major reason why the team has taken the time to volunteer. She has instilled a sense of pride and commitment in the team in giving, especially to area youths.

Recently the team attended Franklin Elementary School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to assist the school's physical education program. They showed students ranging from grades 3-5 basic tumbling moves in gymnastics. They also showed the students stretching techniques and gave them tips on balance and nutrition.

The program also served as a tool to introduce the sport of gymnastics to youths.

"I think it's more of a thrill for us, then it is the kids," said Katie Bloom (Snellvile, Ga./ Gwinnett Gymnastics Center). "We have just as much fun as the kids and you can't put a price on the smiles you see on their faces."
