WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS WILL REMAIN AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE

Dec. 13, 2002

CAPE GIRARDEAU - For the past several months an ad hoc committee appointed by the President of Southeast Missouri State University, Dr. Kenneth W. Dobbins, has been reviewing various aspects of the intercollegiate athletics program. This review was required as part of the athletics re-certification process mandated by the NCAA for all Division I programs every ten years. One area of study involved an evaluation of women's gymnastics, with specific attention focused on student-athlete participation and the investment of coaching and financial resources in the program.

After a thorough and deliberate study, which included a review and campus visit by an outside consultant, the University has reaffirmed its commitment to sponsoring intercollegiate women's gymnastics. The 2003 season represents the 28th consecutive year for women's gymnastics at Southeast Missouri State. The overall competitive record for the program is 460-253-1. Southeast has had 37 All-American gymnasts in the last 27 seasons, including five individual national champions.

The 2003 Southeast gymnasts open the season on Jan. 12 at Centenary University in Shreveport, La. The first home meet will be against Illinois State, Jan. 19, 2 p.m., at Houck Field House.
