Soccer Prevails In Exhibition Opener Otahkians defeat Memphis Tiger 3-1 thanks to goals from freshman newcomers.
Aug. 20, 2001
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - If tonight was a sign of things to come, the Southeast Women's Soccer team will be in good shape this season. Three newcomers, Erin Slattery, Marla Gianino and Laura Hauskins each scored a goal as the Otahks defeated the Conference USA based Memphis Tigers 3-1 on Monday night. The freshman trio led the way for Southeast and senior goalkeeper Beth Guccione only allowed one goal in the first test of the season for Southeast. Slattery wasted no time scoring the game's first goal, a mere 2:12 into the game thanks to assists from Gianino and Hauskins. Hauskins added her goal, from an Erika Todd assist, in the 36th minute and Gianinio scored her goal, also off a Todd assist, 10 minutes into the second frame of play. The Tigers finished 9-11 last year in a strong Conference USA league. Southeast will get another look at a CUSA foe on Friday, when the Saint Louis Billikens come to Houck Stadium for the final pre-season contest of the season. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. |
