Southeast Wins Soccer Opener 2-1 at Illini Cup

Aug. 29, 2003

Box Score

St. Louis - A very wet field made for a wet and sloppy season opener for the Otahkians. Southeast overcame the weather challenges as they netted two goals to slide past Ohio 2-1 in the first game of the Illini Cup in Champaign, Ill. This game marks the season opener for both squads.

Southeast took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute as junior forward Erin Slattery found the back of the net for her 14th career goal. She was assisted by Marla Gianino and Heather Reding. Other than the Slattery's lone goal in the first half, the goalkeepers saw little action as both teams managed only 2 shots apiece in the first half.

The Otahkians struck again early in the second half as senior midfielder Valerie Henderson scored her 16 career goal off an assist from senior forward Erica Todd in the 50th minute.

Southeast couldn't hold Ohio scoreless as Bobcat junior Gina Siedentopf put them on the board in the 60th minute with a 15-ft unassisted goal.

Ohio had 11 shots on the night as Southeast had 8. Both goalkeepers went the distance on the night as they played the full ninety minutes with 4 saves apiece.

Up next, the Otahkians look to keep their streak alive as they face Oakland at noon this Sunday, August 31, in their final game of the Illini Cup.
