Soccer Blanks Washington University, 1-0
Sept. 1, 2010 By Patrick ClarkSoutheast Missouri State Sports InformationCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri State women’s soccer team scored early and shutdown the potent Washington University (Mo.) offense on Wednesday evening, holding on to a 1-0 win at Houck Stadium. Freshman Stephanie Palmer provided all the offense the Redhawks (3-1) needed in the first half. Lauren Bozesky found Ashley Runion at the top of the box with a cross from the leftwing. Runion then connected with a perfect lead pass to Palmer who beat the Bears goalie one-on-one in the 20th minute. It was Palmer’s third goal of the season, tying her with Runion for the team lead. For Runion it was her team-best fourth assist of the season, giving her 14 in her career which ranks fourth on the school’s all-time career charts. Bozesky was also credited with an assist, her second of the season. After Palmer’s goal, the game became a chess match as the Redhawks countered every offensive move the Bears (0-1) attempted. The team collectively shutdown All-American Emma Brown, limiting her to seven shots of which only two were on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Ashton Aubuchon (3-1) recorded her first collegiate shutout. She finished with three saves. The Redhawks out-shot the Bears, 19-16 with 12 of their shots coming in the first period. In the second half they fell back and played a more defensive game and limited the Bears to just eight shots with just two coming on goal. Bozesky led the team with six shots, just missing on two scoring chances. Runion tied Bozesky for the team lead with two shots on goal. Those attempts on net gave her 77 in her career, ranking her second on the school’s all-time charts. Junior defender Nikki Edwards started her 36th-straight game and joined defenders Shona Goodwin and Hayley Abbott as players who played the full 90 minutes. Clara Jaques received the loss in the nets for the Bears, who came into the game ranked No. 2 in the NCAA D-III Preseason Polls. The Redhawks have not lost at home in nine-straight games dating back to last year. They have won four-straight at home improving to 7-0-2 over that nine-game span. The win over Bears is the first win over a St. Louis-based team in five tries. Last year the Redhawks fell 4-1 to the Bears in St. Louis. The Redhawks will continue their three-game homestand on Sunday, September 5 as they host Ball State in a 1:00 p.m. match. The game will be the first of four games WebCasted live by KFVS12.com this season. Live stats will also be available for the game as well. |
