Sept. 7, 2008
ST. LOUIS, MO. - (Sunday, September 7, 2008) - The Redhawks soccer team's offensive struggles continued as they remained scoreless on the season dropping a 2-0 contest to non-conference foe Army at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis University. The Redhawks were outshot 18-9 by the Black Knights in the opening game of the 11th annual Toys For Tots Soccer Classic and managed only three shots on goal. The Redhawks (0-2) fell behind quickly as the Black Knights (4-1) scored both their goals in the game's first eight minutes. The Black Knights immediately challenged the Redhawks starting goalie Jessica Beckham. After Beckham turned away a shot by Elizabeth Betterbed, Dymon Washington received a pass from Ashleigh Sheets on a breakway and launched a kick from ten-yards out that beat Beckham for the game's first goal at the 3:19 mark. Less then five minutes later the Black Knights struck again off a corner. Pia White went high off a Betterbed corner and headed the ball into the corner for the final goal of the game at the 7:33 mark. Sophomore Ashley Runion had a few chances in the first half to get the Redhawks on the board. Her shot at the 19:15 mark was saved by Black Knights keeper Alex Lostetter. Her shot at the 23:12 mark went high as did her attempt at 43:35. The Black Knights outshot the Redhawks in the opening half 10-6 including 4-2 on goal. The second half fared no better for the Redhawks as they were again outshot 8-3 and could only manage one shot on goal as the Black Knights smothered the Redhawks offense. Lostetter turned away consecutive shots on goals by Runion and Kristi Frick in a span of 17 seconds in the waning moments of the final half to preserve the shutout victory. Runion led all players with five shots and led the Redhawks with two shots on goal. Frick's attempted shot on goal to rounded out the Redhawks offense. Beckham fell to 0-2 in the nets as she recorded six saves in the complete game effort. Washington and White's goals were their second of the season respectively. Sheets led the team with four shots including a game-high three shots on goal. Lostetter (4-1) turned away three shots and recorded her first shutout of the season enroute to her being named the tournament Most Valuable Player and helped lead the team to the weekend tournament title.
