Soccer Holds On to Defeat Air Force, 2-1

Sept. 17, 2004

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -

The Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit to record two goals for the 2-1 victory over Air Force in the St. Louis University Toys for Tots Tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo. The win improves Southeast to 4-2 on the season and drops Air Force to 3-4.

Air Force broke the defensive battle in the first period with an Amanda Cleland goal in the 38th minute. Cleland shot a loose ball off an Air Force corner kick that goalie Amanda Wrzos could not keep a hold of. The goal was unassisted.

Southeast responded with a goal of their own right before the end of the period with an Emily Newsham goal. Newsham's goal also came off a corner kick with Laura Hauskins and Alaina Lacopo assisting.

Southeast out-shot Air Force 6-4, but Air Force held the advantage on corner kicks 4-1.

Southeast came out in the 2nd period and dictated the rest of the game, applying constant offensive and defensive pressure to the Falcons.

Newsham struck again, this time in the 71st minute. She attempted a shot from two yards out that Falcon's goalie Jennifer Drew initially blocked, but could not hold on two. The ball bounced back to Newsham for a second try, this time she made good on the attempt placing it in the right corner for her team-leading third goal and second game-winning goal of the season. Lisa Schweppe was credited with the assist, her second of the season.

Wrzos stood her ground as the Falcon's struggled to get clean shots, one attempt hit the top crossbar and two other went wide left. She ended the game with four saves and the win.

Southeast recorded 13 total shots in the game, seven on goal and held Air Force to nine shots, five on goal.

Next for Southeast is a non-conference match-up with Arkansas State at Houck Stadium on Sunday, September 19. Start time is 2:00 p.m.
