Soccer Wins with Second-half goal
Sept. 18, 2003 Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast (4-1-2) wins their 3rd straight as they topple Evansville (0-5-1) tonight 1-0. A quick run up the middle by Southeast Missouri's Diana Poovey made all the difference in tonight's game. The junior forward from Loveland, Colorado weaved her way between two Evansville defenders sending a 12-yd blast over the outstretched arms of the Purple Aces' goalkeeper Liz Hains to record the only goal of the match in the 65th minute. Poovey's recorded 3 shots of the night as she converted for one goal. Also leading the offensive attack tonight were seniors Julie Wunderlich and Valerie Henderson. Midfielder Julie Wunderlich led the team in shots with 4 on the night while Henderson and Poovey followed right behind with 3. The Otahkians had a difficult time getting started as Evansville dominated the first 20 minutes, outshooting Southeast 7-0. The team gradually gained momentum throughout the game to outshot the Aces 18-14. Goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos was solid in goal as she faced 14 shots and turned away all four of Evansville's shots on goal, recording her 2nd shutout of the season. The soccer team moves to 4-1-2 as they travel to Indiana State to take on the Sycamores this Sunday, September 21 at noon.
