Soccer Drops 2-1 Heartbreaker At No. 26 Saint Louis

Sept. 18, 2006

Box Score

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Maureen Hughes scored two goals to help No. 26 Saint Louis edge visiting Southeast Missouri State, 2-1, in a non-conference contest tonight at SLU's Hermann Stadium. With the win, SLU improves its record to 5-1-2, while SEMO falls to 3-4 on the year.

The Billikens opened the contest with a 1-0 lead at the 19:35 mark of first half on a penalty kick by Hughes. Freshman forward Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty) brought the Redhawks back into the game in the 29th minute with a header off a corner kick by junior defender Blair Schuppan (St. Louis, MO/Nerinx Hall) that tied the score at 1-1.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second half until the 86th minute when Hughes scored the game-winning goal on an unassisted shot from the 18-yard box. SLU held off a late Southeast attack in the final minutes to preserve the victory.

The Billikens held advantages over Southeast in shot attempts (11-3) and corner kicks (6-2), while senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) kept the Redhawks in the contest with a match-best six saves.

Southeast opens Ohio Valley Conference play this Friday (Sept. 22) with a home contest against Murray State at Houck Stadium with a start time of 7 p.m.
