CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian soccer team continued its perfect start, pushing an early goal across and then playing tough defense to defeat Arkansas State 1-0 on Thursday night.

The game was the most physical of the year for the Otahkians (5-0), as ASU (2-4) was whistled for 20 total fouls while Southeast had 16. The game really got out of control in the last 10 minutes as three yellow cards and two reds cards were given out. Southeast yellow cards were given to Erika Todd and Marla Gianino, while Christine Schager got one for ASU. In the 86th minute, Southeast's Valerie Henderson and ASU's Sheri Kiser, the team's leading scorer, were given red cards and ejected from the game for fighting. Neither player will be available for their team's next games, both of which are on Sunday.

Otahk senior forward Nichole Thiele scored the team's lone goal at the 7:06 mark of the first half. The goal was the fifth of the season for Thiele, and her seventh consecutive game with a goal, which ties her own school record. Southeast also extended its home winning streak to eight games and its overall winning streak to five games, both school bests.

With the victory, Southeast head coach Heather Nelson won her 50th career game as a head coach.

Senior goalkeeper Beth Guccione recorded three saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season and eighth of her career, which ties the school record for shutouts.

The Southeast team also set a game record for most corner kicks, recording 14 on the night.

Southeast will be back in action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Houck Stadium versus Creighton.
