CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Sophomore forward Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty) tallied a goal and an assist to lead Southeast Missouri State to a 3-2 win at Morehead State Friday night in the Ohio Valley Conference soccer opener for both teams. The Redhawks hike their season record to 4-2-1 (1-0) and the Eagles drop to 1-6 (0-1) on the year.

Alexander gave Southeast an early 1-0 lead in the first minute of the contest after scoring her third goal of the season with senior forward Alaina Lacopo (Troy, IL/Triad) providing the assist. The Redhawks later hiked their advantage to 2-0 in the 33rd minute on a goal from freshman forward Ashley Runion (St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt South) off a pass from Alexander prior to intermission.

The Eagles got on the board in the 63rd minute when senior Rebekah Kendall scored on a penalty kick to slice their deficit at 2-1. Kendal struck again in the 65th minute with an unassisted goal to tie the score at 2-2. Meanwhile, Southeast was playing with only 10 players throughout the second half after senior defender Blair Schuppan (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) was cited with a red card in the 63rd minute. The score remained the same until the 87th minute after junior forward Casey Kraft (St. Louis, MO/Nerinx Hall) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick and Southeast held on in the final minutes for the win.

The Redhawks held advantages over Morehead State in both shot attempts (13-8) and corner kicks (3-2) in the match. Runion led Southeast with four shots, including three attempts on goal, while senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) posted three saves.

Kendall paced the Eagles with four shot attempts that included three chances on goal and junior Samanatha Yocke tallied four saves in 45 minutes of play.

Southeast concludes the weekend Sunday afternoon with an OVC match at Eastern Kentucky beginning at 1 p.m.
