Southeast Blanks Morehead 1-0

Oct. 5, 2003

Box Score

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Soccer moves to 2-0-0 in conference competition as they blank Morehead State, 1-0, today. They record their 5th season shut out and their 2nd OVC shut out in just 2 conference games. The Otahkians extended their all-time series lead to 6-1 over Morehead State and moved to 7-2-3 on the season. Morehead fell to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-2-0 in league play.

The game seemed to be pretty evenly matched at the beginning, as the first 25 minutes the game were largely spent in the middle of the field. Sophomore midfielder Megan Hejlek scored the lone goal at the 27:41 mark to record the game-winning goal. The play started as junior midfielder, Marla Gianino took a corner kick off from the right side. The ball glanced off the body of teammate Heather Reding directly to Hejlek, who while standing on the goal line, kicked a shoulder-high shot past MSU keeper Stefani Workman.

The Otahkians controlled the offensive attack as they held a 17-9 advantage in shots. A reenergized Morehead State made a furious effort during the second-half as they evened out Southeast's 3-0 1st half advantage in corners, at 3-3 during the 2nd half. But the Otahkian defense played solid as they held them scoreless.

Keeper Amanda Wrzos recorded 4 saves, while playing a perfect game to record her fourth shutout. Southeast spread out its offensive attack with nine different players taking at least one shot. Junior Diana Poovey and freshman Jessi Wuellner each led the team with three shots, while Hejlek had 2 shots and the only goal.

Southeast will return home for two games this week as they play host to the both OVC newcomers, Samford and Jacksonville State. They play Samford this Friday, October 10, at 7:00 pm and Jacksonville State Sunday, October 12, at 2:00 pm. Games will be played at Houck Stadium. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.oo for children 18 and under.
