Soccer Shut Out Jacksonville State, 0-0

Oct. 12, 2003

Box Score

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast (7-3-4, 2-1-1 OVC) records third conference shut out, as they played Jacksonville to a 110-minute draw. Neither team was able to find the net as the game ended 0-0 after 2 overtime periods.

The first half was fairly evenly matched as Southeast barely out shot Jacksonville State 3-2. Southeast did however control the ball in Gamecocks territory most of the half, but couldn't seem to fire off many shots.

At the beginning of the second half Jacksonville (7-3-4, 1-0-3 OVC) came out intense. The squad's best chance to score came just under two minutes into the half as Jacksonville's Tiffane Stewart sent a bomb toward the top of the net. Keeper Amanda Wrzos made a spectacular leap as she deflected the ball up out of play. However the ball hit the football cross bar and fell back into the net, almost appearing as a goal.

Southeast had several very close shots on goal, but just couldn't get the ball past keeper Amanda Stephens. In the 76th minute freshman Molli Beard almost scored for Southeast as goalkeeper Amanda Stephens made a diving block. The ball was deflected toward the goal, but her defenders were there to clear it out.

In the first minute of overtime, Southeast forward Molli Beard headed down the center of the field on a breakaway. Forward Jessi Wuellner made a perfect V-cut in front of Beard for the pass. Keeper Tiffane Stewart was forced to pull forward and challenge the shot. Jessi Wuellner released the shot just as Stewart dove to stop the ball. Southeast came alive and had 3 more shots in the first overtime, as Jacksonville was not able to get the ball for any. Southeast wore down a little in the second overtime as they only got off one shot.

Keeper Amanda Wrzos faced 7 shots on the after and saved 4, while keeper Amanda Stephens faced 14 Southeast shots and made 10 saves.

The Otahkians attack was led by junior Marla Gianino and freshman Molli Beard, as they both recorded 3 shots and 2 on goal.

Southeast will now hit the road for two more conference games next weekend. The Otahkians travel to face Tennessee-Martin on Friday, October 17 at 4:00 pm and then Murray State on Sunday, October 19 at 1:00 pm.
