Oct. 13, 2000
Cape Girardeau, Mo. - A smothering Eastern Illinois defense limited the Southeast Missouri State soccer team to one goal and just 10 shots on goal, as the Panthers collected their fourth Ohio Valley Conference win of the year by a score of 3-1. EIU is undefeated in league play and improved to 11-3-1 overall. Southeast fell to 1-3 in conference action and 6-5-1 overall.
Eastern jumped onto the board first, at 10:04 in, off a Cara LeMaster goal, who received the ball off a series of feeds starting with Devon Bissell and ending with Rebecca Traen. The Panthers came back nearly 19 minutes later at 39:40, as Traen scored her own goal off of Devon Bissel's second of three feeds on the evening.
The Panthers took the 2-0 advantage into halftime, as Southeast was able to get off just four shots on goal.
MF Karen Schmitt (Fr., Washinton, Mo.) put Southeast's lone goal on the board at 54:24. F Nichole Thiele (Sr., Cape Girardeau, Mo.) provided the assists. It would be just one of six shot the Otahks would have in the second stanza.
EIU would add its third and final goal by Beth Liesen - on an assist by Bissell - at 72:47 to seal the win.
The Panthers had the opportunity to score a goal at 21:31, but the Rebecca Traen shot was recalled, as the referee confirmed that she used her hands to push the ball into the net.
EIU goalie Jeanine Fredrick was accessed the Southeast goal, but recorded no saves on the evening. She improved to 11-3-1. G Tami Hebert (Sr., O'Fallon, Mo.) made five saves on the evening.
Southeast will go on the road this Sunday at 2 p.m. with a non-conference tilt against Central Arkansas.
