CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Friday, October 16, 2009) – The Redhawks soccer team finally cracked the win column in Ohio Valley Conference play with a 1-0 win over visiting Jacksonville State at Houck Stadium on Friday evening. The win improved the Redhawks to 1-1-2 in OVC play as they jockey for seeding in the OVC Tournament.

The Redhawks (6-5-2, 1-1-2 OVC) scored the match’s only goal in the first period as junior Ashley Runion collected a pass from freshman Ali Bauer at the top of the box and blasted the ball into the lower right corner of the net 7:37 into the opening half.

It was the Redhawks fastest goal of the season and just their fifth first period goal of the season.

For Runion it was her fourth goal of the season tying her for the team lead with freshman Bobbi Jo Schlick. The goal also gave her a team-best 11 points.

Bauer recorded her third assist of the season to tie her for the team lead.

The Redhawks were outshot by the Gamecocks (6-9-0, 0-5-0 OVC) 14-9 but the Redhawks held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Runion led the Redhawks with three shots. Senior Lauren Lacopo led all players with two shots on goal.

Amber DeLaney led all players with six shots and recorded the team’s only shot on goal.

Freshman goal keeper Kristen Starkey improved her record to 5-3-2 and recorded her fifth shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.92.
