Soccer Otahkians Win Eighth Game of Season in 2-0 Blanking of Tennesee-Martin Eighth win doubles total from a season ago.
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (October 17, 2000) - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian soccer team won its eighth game of the season on Tuesday night by blanking Tennessee-Martin 2-0 at Houck Stadium. The first half was dictated by ball control and missed opportunities for Southeast (8-5-1, 2-3 OVC). Despite several good scoring chances, Southeast only managed one goal, off a great move from Nichole Thiele (Sr., Cape Girardeau, Mo.) to lead 1-0 at the half. The goal was the 11th of the season for Thiele. The second half saw Southeast strike quickly when Angela Martinez (So., Washington, Mo.) scored her first goal of the season off a Thiele assist. The rest of the game Southeast continued to control the ball and snuff out Tennessee-Martin opportunities to score. Martin's best chance came late in the second half after goalkeeper Tami Hebert (Sr., O'Fallon, Mo.) fell down on a save attempt. However, the Skyhawks were unable to capitalize as a group of Southeast defenders made a team save. Hebert finished the game with eight saves and her OVC leading sixth shutout of the season. Overall, Southeast finished with 20 total shots to Martin's 14. Southeast and the OVC's leading scorer Erika Todd (Fr., Granite City, Ill.) was among three Otahkians players who did not participate due to unnamed team disciplinary actions. The win doubles the Otahks win total from a season ago, when they won four games in the inaugural season of soccer at Southeast. The team still has a chance to reach double figure victories with two regular season games and the OVC Tournament still remaining. Tennessee Martin falls to 0-15 overall and 0-4 in the OVC for 2000. Southeast will next face Middle Tennessee on Saturday, October 21st at 7:00 p.m. |
