Southeast Earns First OVC Victory Against Austin Peay, 2-0
Oct. 17, 2008
By Brett Maikowski, Soccer Contact CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Southeast Missouri State soccer team picked up their first Ohio Valley Conference win of the season tonight against Austin Peay after shutting them out 2-0. The Redhawks now improve to 2-7-3, 1-3-2 OVC for the year, while the Lady Govs drop to 4-10-1, 1-3-1 OVC this season. In the first half, SEMO was on the offensive attack as they outshot APSU by a 7-1 margin, while recording two goals. The first shot to get by Lady Govs goalie Carley Newman came off the foot of Casey Kraft who hit it off of defender Hannah Jones to give the Redhawks the early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of play. Six minutes later, Kraft was at work again to extend the lead for her team. This time, a penalty in the goalie box gave Kraft a free shot, which she took full advantage of as she put the ball in the back of the net, giving Southeast its largest lead of the season. The second half was more evenly matched as both teams recorded five shots on each other. Austin Peay wasn't able to hit their target though as they had no shots on goal. They had two chances to score from corner kicks early in the second half, but still nothing got going to cut into the Redhawk lead. Protecting the nets tonight were sophomore Jessica Beckham and Carley Newman. Beckham notched her second shutout in three games although not making a single save in the contest, while playing all 90 minutes. Newman on the other hand recorded four saves for the game, while allowing two goals go past her. The Redhawks will look to go a perfect 2-0 this weekend in Tennessee as they go up against fellow OVC competitor Tennessee Tech on Sunday. Game time is set to start at 1 p.m. |
