Soccer Bests UT-Martin 2-0 to Move Within An Inch of OVC Championship

MARTIN, Tenn. - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian team used back-to-back second half goals to push by Tennessee-Martin on Wednesday and move ever so close to their first Ohio Valley Conference Championship.

Southeast (13-1 overall, 4-0 OVC) can clinch its first regular season title with a Murray State loss at Tennessee Tech on Saturday or UT-Martin next Wednesday, or defeat the Racers head-to-head when they square off at Houck Stadium on November 4.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Otahks outshoot UTM (4-12, 1-3) 10-2, the Southeast offense woke up in the second half getting goals from Julie Wunderlich and Nichole Thiele a minute and a half apart to push the Otahkians to victory. Wunderlich's goal was the first of her two-year Southeast career.

For the game Southeast outshot UTM 18-4, while goalkeeper Beth Guccione recorded her 11th shutout of the season. As a team Southeast has recorded four consecutive shutouts. In four Ohio Valley games this season, the Otahkians have outscored their opponents 12-0.

With the 13th victory of the season, Southeast continues its best season in school history, having recorded three more wins that their previous best.

Southeast will step out of the conference to challenge Creighton in St. Louis on Friday night. The game was schedule in an effort to offset the three cancelled games earlier this season due to the events of September 11.

The Otahkians will also host the St. Louis-based Busch Soccer Club in an exhibition/fundraiser game on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Houck Stadium.
