Soccer Scores Victory over Texas Tech, 2-1

By: Patrick Clark - CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Sunday, October 24, 2004) With their conference season over, the Southeast Missouri State soccer team has set out to win their last three games before heading to the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Tournament. Southeast defeated Big 12 opponent Texas Tech 2-1 at Houck Stadium to improve their record to 9-5-2 as the Red Raiders suffered their 13th straight loss. Texas Tech struck first when Jenifer Thomas broke away and beat Southeast goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos one-on-one for her fourth goal of the season in the 24th minute. Southeast would answer with a goal of their own right before the half. Caitlin Huber scored on a 22-yard floater over the outstretched arms of Red Raider goalie Megan Knauss at :21 seconds before the break. The goal is Huber's first career goal and points. Marla Gianino and Lisa Schweppe were each credited with the assist. For Gianino it was her fifth assist of the year and Schweppe recorded her fourth assist of the year.
Molli Beard scored the game winner at the 71st minute when she received a pass from Megan Hejlek and beat Knauss with a floater into the right corner. It was Beard's team-leading fifth goal of the year and her team-leading 10th and 11th points. The goal was her third game winner of the year which also leads the team. Wrzos recorded seven saves, four in the second period, to earn her 32nd win of her career. Southeast out-shot Texas Tech 12-11, including 8-6 in the second period. Southeast also held the advantage in corner kicks 3-1. Next for Southeast is a road contest against Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Thursday, October 28 in Edwardsville, Illinois. Kick-off is at 7:00 P.M. |
