CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Senior midfielder Molli Beard (Libertyville, IL/Libertyville) scored her first goal in two years as Southeast Missouri State soccer claimed a 1-0 victory over visiting Jacksonville State in a Ohio Valley Conference match tonight at Houck Stadium. The Redhawks improve to 10-2-2 overall and 7-0-1 in OVC play, while the Gamecocks fall to 4-11-1 (2-5-1) on the season.

Beard scored the goal in the 21st minute after receiving a center midfield cross from senior forward Alaina Lacopo (Troy, IL/Triad) and converted a one-time shot past JSU goalie Elizabeth Selasky. The last time Beard scored in a match was Sept. 10, 2005 when she recorded two goals at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and sat out the 2006 season as a redshirt while recovering from injuries.

The Redhawks continued the pressure by creating several more scoring chances throughout the match, but were unable to convert another score. Southeast held advantages over JSU in shot attempts (31-3) and corner kicks (5-0), while the Gamecocks posted a 10-2 leading margin in fouls.

Sophomore forward Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty) led all players with eight shots, including four on goal, for the home team. Beard and senior midfielder Margie Schaeffler (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word) contributed five shots apiece in addition to senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) recording her sixth shutout of the season for the Redhawks.

Selasky paced Jacksonville State by tallying a match-best nine saves, while three players produced a shot attempt.

Beard, Lacopo, Pickering and Schaeffler were honored along with fellow seniors Lauren Costello (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word), Megan Matter (Florissant, MO/Hazelwood West) and Blair Schuppan (St. Louis, MO/Nerinx Hall) in a Senior Night ceremony prior to the match.

The Redhawks will battle Samford in their regular-season finale Sunday afternoon at Houck Stadium with a start time of 2 p.m. The winner of the match will claim the OVC regular-season title and host the OVC Tournament semifinals and finals on Nov. 9-11.
