Soccer Sends Seniors Out With 1-0 Win
Oct. 31, 2004
By: Patrick Clark - CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Sunday, October 31, 2004) In their final home game of their Southeast soccer career, the nine Southeast seniors got a nice treat on Halloween. Southeast recorded a 1-0 victory over a scrappy Alabama A&M team in a rainy afternoon at Houck Stadium. Senior Marla Gianino had a memorable game scoring the game-winner in the 73rd minute. After receiving a well-placed pass from freshman Emily Newsham, she beat the Lady Bulldogs defense and goalkeeper Priscilla Mensah with an 18-yard roller into the right corner. For Gianino it was her second goal of the season and her 15th career goal moving her into the school's top-five in career goals. It was also her 8th and 9th point of the year, solidifying her at 3rd place on the school's career points chart with 51 career points.
Newsham was credited with her first career assist. Junior Ashley DeRoy was also credited with her second assist of the season. All nine seniors started the game for Southeast including back-up goalkeeper Carina Souza, who started at forward and recorded a shot on goal. Southeast goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos had a superb game in net in her final home game. She recorded her fourth shutout of the season and 14th of her career. The holder of nine school records as a goalkeeper, she stopped five Lady Bulldog shots for 10th win of the year. Southeast out-shot Alabama A&M 18-7, including 9 shots on goal. The season continues for Southeast as they travel to Murray, Kentucky to face Murray State in the play-in game of the O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. The game is set for Tuesday, November 2.
