Soccer Closes Season with 1-0 Overtime Win Over Cougars

Oct. 31, 2009

Final Stats

By Brett Maikowski, Southeast Missouri State Sports Information

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Bobbi Jo Schlick scored the game-winning goal tonight 2:20 into overtime to give Southeast the 1-0 win over SIU Edwardsville. With the victory, the Redhawks finish the season with a 8-7-3, 2-3-3 OVC record, while the Cougars drop to 2-10-2.

Both teams were pretty evenly matched tonight offensively, as Southeast only outshot SIU Edwardsville, 12-11. Ashley Runion and Bobbi Jo Schlick each had a pair of shots in the game, but none of them were on goal until Schlick's game-winner in overtime.

The goal came at the 92:20 mark in the match after the Redhawks made their way down the field. Mabel Velarde sent the ball into the goalie box and Schlick put in her team leading sixth goal of the year from 10 yards out. The assist was Velarde's second of the season and third of her Southeast career.

In goal, Kristen Starkey recorded her seventh shutout of the season in 92:20 minutes of playing time. She recorded six saves in the match as well. On the other side of the field, SIUE goalkeeper Stephanie Jung snagged five saves while giving up the one goal.

This concludes Southeast's 2009 season, as the Redhawks finish in seventh place in the Ohio Valley Conference. SEMO was picked to finish sixth by the preseason polls, but were unable to earn that spot as Eastern Kentucky edged them out to earn the final OVC Tournament berth.
