Soccer Lose to Racers in OVC Tourney, 1-0 to End Season

Nov. 2, 2004

Box Score

By: Patrick Clark -

MURRAY, Ky. - (Tuesday, November 02, 2004) The field was sloppy and the play was aggressive; those two ingredients failed to give the Southeast Missouri State soccer team a victory Tuesday afternoon as they fell to Murray State, 1-0 in the play-in game of the 2004 O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Tournament in Murray, Kentucky.

With rain pushing back the start time of the game and pouring-down on both teams the whole second half, No. 3 seed Murray State (8-10-1) scored the lone goal :17 seconds into the second half. Jamie Roche's shot attempt was blocked by Southeast goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos, but the loose ball found it's way to Lacey Ford who placed it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and ultimately the game-winner.

Southeast attempted to come back, but all five of their shots on goal in the second period were turned-away by Racer goalie Annie Fortier who ended up making nine saves in the game.

The game featured 40 combined fouls, 23 by Murray State and 17 by Southeast. Five yellow cards were handed out as both teams played aggressively trying to gain an upper-hand.

Murray State attempted 15 shots in the game, nine on goal as Southeast finished with 14 shots and 10 shots on goal.

In her final game Wrzos made eight saves. Before the game Wrzos was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts the previous week against Alabama A&M.

This is the earliest exit my Southeast in the OVC Tourney since losing to Morehead State, 2-1 in the first round of the 2000 tournament.

Murray State advances to the semifinals to face No. 2 seed eastern Illinois in Birmingham, Alabama.
