CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian soccer team capped a perfect Ohio Valley Conference regular season by defeating the Murray State Racers 4-0 on senior day on Sunday afternoon at Houck Stadium.
Southeast (15-1 overall, 5-0 Ohio Valley) outscored its conference opponents 16-0 this season in claiming their first regular season championship in their three-year history. The Otahkians had never had a above .500 conference record until this season, but were perfect in 2001.
Senior Nichole Thiele got the Otahkians on the board first, scoring what would be the game-winning goal, the 29th goal of her career, at the 32:12 mark. The goal was her ninth of the season, which ranks second on the Otahkian team. Freshman Marla Gianino added her eighth goal of the season off a Karen Schmitt assist 10 minutes later to put Southeast up 2-0 at the break.
Freshman Erin Slattery, the team's leading goal scorer, scored her 10th goal of the season, off a penalty kick early in the second frame. Sophomore Valerie Henderson added her third goal of the season off a corner kick thanks to assists from Erin Slattery and Erika Todd.
Senior goalkeeper Beth Guccione, recorded her 12th shutout of the season, and 15th of her career in stopping three Racer shots. She has a good shot of ranking in the top five all-time in NCAA history for shutout percentage in a season if she can record one more shutout this season.
With the win Southeast extended its home winning streak to 12 games, all of which have been by shutout. Southeast has outscored its opponents in those 12 games by a margin of 37-0.
The team's three goals brought their total to 45 on the season, breaking last year's mark of 44 goals in a season.
Southeast will open up OVC Tournament play at home next weekend against these same Murray State Racers (8-8-2, 2-3). Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
