Soccer Heads to OVC Tournament Semi-finals

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast (10-5-4, 5-3-1 OVC) shut out Tennessee-Martin (9-7-3, 4-3-2 OVC) 2-0 this afternoon in Martin, Tenn. to earn a spot in the OVC Tournament Semi-finals.

A corner kick by junior Marla Gianino put the Otahkians on the board early. In the 17th minute, Gianino assisted freshman Molli Beard for the goal, recording her first career game-winning goal. The goal was her fourth on the season, tying her with teammate Erin Slattery for the lead.

Southeast put up an insurance goal in the 54th minute, as junior Diana Poovey found the net for an unassisted goal. She led the offense attack with three shots as teammate Molli Beard followed closely behind with two. The rest of the shooting was spread around the team with 12 girls recording one shot a piece.

The squad dominated the game as they out shot the Skyhawks 17-6. Southeast goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos earned her sixth shutout of the season, as she had four saves. Skyhawk keeper Megan Dempsey was kept busy in goal by the Otahkians as she recorded seven saves, but allowed two goals.

Southeast will now travel to Birmingham, Ala. to pair-off with Samford University in the conference semi-finals this Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. Samford recorded a 7-1-0 OVC record during the regular season to claim the OVC championship and the right to host the tournament.
