Redhawks Claim 1-0 Win Over UT Martin in OVC Soccer Championship Semifinal

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Top-seeded Southeast Missouri State is headed to the Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Championship final for the second consecutive year after capturing a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded UT Martin Friday night in a tough semifinal battle at Houck Stadium. The Redhawks improve their season record to 12-2-2, while the Skyhawks finish the season with a 10-6-3 record.

Freshman forward Ashley Runion (St. Peters, MO/Ft. Zumwalt South) tallied her team-leading 10th goal of the year in the 63rd minute after she received a pass from senior midfielder Lauren Costello (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word) on the far side of the goal and chipped in a shot past UTM goalkeeper Johanna Rathburn.

The Redhawks held on for the win despite the visitors posting a 7-6 shooting advantage in the second half. Southeast posted a 12-9 leading margin in shot attempts, while the Skyhawks notched a slim 1-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Runion posted five shot attempts on the night and senior midfielder Margie Schaeffler (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word) tallied three shots with two attempts on goal. Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) produced four saves for her eighth shutout of the season.

UT Martin was led by senior Katie Behrens' five shot attempts and Rathburn posted four saves in goal for the Skyhawks.

The Redhawks will battle second-seeded Samford in the OVC finals at Houck Sunday afternoon with a start time of 1 p.m. The championship match will be shown live on the internet at and the winner will earn the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
