CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Senior soccer player Nichole Thiele was honored on Thursday when she was named to the Verizon Academic All-District team for region VII.

Thiele, a physical education major, has a cumulative 3.781 G.P.A. at Southeast Missouri State. On the playing field, Thiele recorded nine goals and two assists for the Otahkian team that finished 16-2 this season and set several conference and national records, including being ranked ninth in the country in scoring offense. Thiele was an All-OVC second-team selection in 2001 after finishing fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference in points per game (1.18) and third in goals per game (0.53).

In her Southeast career, Thiele, a three-time co-captain, was a three-time All-OVC selection and leaves the Southeast program as its all-time leading goals (29) and points (68) scorer and also ranks first in game-winning goals (10). Earlier this season she scored a goal in seven consecutive games, which tied her own school record.

"Its an fantastic accomplishment and well deserved for Nichole," Southeast Head Coach Heather Nelson said. "She puts 100 percent of herself into everything she does and we are very proud of her."

The Verizon academic all-district team honors student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. By being named to the all-district team, Thiele's name will now be placed on the national ballot for consideration for Academic All-American. This is the first year the soccer awards have been presented by themselves, as previously they were group together in a winter at-large nomination.
