Soccer Recruits Headline All-Metro Team

June 18, 2004

All five of Coach Nelson's recruits earned a spot for themselves on the 2004 All-Metro Soccer Team. The All-Metro Team is made up of the best players from the St. Louis metro area. Incoming freshmen Alaina Lacopo, Lauren Costello and Margie Schaeffler all made an appearance on the All-Metro First Team. Megan Matter landed a spot on the All-Metro Second Team as a defender. Emily Newsham rounds out the recruits as a midfielder on the All-Metro Third Team.

Lacopo is a returning first-team selection at forward. A graduate of Triad High School in Troy, Illinois, Lacopo was among the area's scoring leaders with 36 goals and 20 assists.

Incarnate Word graduate Costello made the All-Metro First Team as a defender. Costello helped lead her team to the Class 2 title by anchoring their defense and shutting down their opponents.

Another Incarnate Word graduate, Schaeffler, was the final member of the All-Metro First Team. Schaeffler was a midfielder who emerged as her team's leader in the midfield. She helped her team by controlling the flow of the game and getting the ball to her teammates.

Matter, a defender from Hazelwood West High School, was a part of the All-Metro Second Team. She was a vital part of her team, as well as a scholar-athlete.

Newsham, a graduate of St. Charles West, made the All-Metro Third Team as a midfielder. Newsham was a strong force for her team in the midfield.
