Soccer Kicks Off 2007 Season With Two Preseason Contests

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - In preparation for their Aug. 31 home opener against Northwestern State, the Southeast Missouri State soccer team kicks off a three-match exhibition schedule with contests against a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference schools on the road this weekend.

The Redhawks open the slate Friday evening at Missouri-St. Louis with a start time of 7:30 p.m. The Riverwomen, guided by 11th-year head coach Beth Goetz, posted a 12-7-1 record in 2006 and were led offensively by junior defender Rachel Lee with 12 goals and seven assists.

Following the UMSL match, Southeast travels to Illinois on Saturday to battle host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at Korte Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. The Cougars finished with a 12-5-3 mark last season and is coached by Lynda Bowers, who is entering her fifth season at the helm. Junior midfielder Elizabeth Valenti is SIUE's leading returning scorer after tallying seven goals and four assists.

Among the 12 returning letterwinners for head coach Heather Nelson's Southeast squad are four All-OVC honorees in seniors Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) and Margie Schaeffler (St. Louis, MO/Incarnate Word); junior Casey Kraft (St. Louis, MO/Nerinx Hall) and sophomore Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty).

The Redhawks close their exhibition schedule on Aug. 26 at Arkansas State beginning at 1:30 p.m.
