Aug. 30, 2001
Southeast vs. Jacksonville State
Houck Stadium (10,000), Cape Girardeau, Mo.
About Southeast: Southeast begins the regular season after exhibition games with Conference USA foes Memphis and Saint Louis. In the Memphis game, three of the 10 Otahkian freshmen got on the board, scoring goals in the 3-1 victory.
Four days later, the Otahks took the field against the powerful Saint Louis Billikens, ranked fifth in their region by a SoccerBuzz poll. Southeast was able to play tough defense and prevent the Billikens, playing in their first exhibition contest of th season, from scoring. Unfortunately, the Otahks did not manage a goal either and the game ended in a scoreless tie.
The tournament should test both Southeast's ability to compete in something other than an exhibition game and test how far the team has come since the first day of practice. A year ago, Southeast claimed the co-championship of the Ball State Cardinal Classic and rode that momentum onto a good season. Early season wins at home will be important confidence boosters for this young team. Including this weekend's two games, Southeast will four home games in the next two weeks, before going on the road for three straight, including a tough road trip that will see games against Indiana and Indiana State.
