Soccer Kicks Off 2007 Season Friday At Home

Aug. 30, 2007

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State soccer welcomes Northwestern State to Houck Stadium this Friday to open the 2007 season Friday night at 7 p.m. This marks the second consecutive year that the Redhawks have opened the season at home and it will be the first meeting between Southeast and the Demons.

The Redhawks posted a 10-8-2 record last season while capturing their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Ninth-year head coach Heather Nelson returns 12 letterwinners and nine starters from that squad, including senior Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles West) and sophomore Courtney Alexander (Liberty, MO/Liberty). Southeast posted a 1-0-1 record in two exhibition matches: a 1-0 win at Missouri-St. Louis on Aug. 17 and a 1-1 tie at Arkansas State on Aug. 26.

Northwestern State welcomes back 20 letterwinners from last season's 9-9-2 team which includes senior forward Erin Hebert, a preseason First Team All-SLC honoree. Hebert paced the Demons with six goals and 15 points in 2006. NSU, led by ninth-year head coach Jimmy Mitchell, dropped a 1-0 decision to Rice in its lone exhibition contest last week at the Demon Soccer Complex.

The Redhawks head to Springfield, Mo., to battle in-state rival Missouri State in a non-conference contest on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m.
