Redhawks Drop Close 1-0 Decision To Missouri State
Sept. 3, 2006 Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State soccer suffered its first loss of the season to in-state rival Missouri State earlier today by a close 1-0 score at Houck Stadium. With the loss, Southeast falls to 1-1 on the season, while Missouri State improves to 3-2. The first half was scoreless between both teams despite the Redhawks having trouble with ball control in the midfield, while only attempting two shots compared to Missouri State's 10. Southeast senior goalkeeper Lindsay Pickering (St. Charles, Mo. - St. Charles West.) kept the ball out of her team's net by recording five saves. Southeast opened the second half with some pressure on Missouri State's side of the field. Sophomore midfielder Casey Kraft (St. Louis, Mo. - Nerinx Hall) had two shots on goal, but both were stopped by Bears goalkeeper Jackie Jasper. The match was still deadlocked at 0-0 until Samantha Aquilar scored on a header off a corner kick by Caroline Rooker to give the visitors the lead. The Redhawks attempted to score the game tying goal in the last 10 minutes but were stopped by Missouri States defense including a shot by Kraft that was saved by Jasper as time expired. The Bears finished with a 14-7 advantage in shot attempts including nine on goal, and also held a 5-3 duke in corner kicks. Pickering finished with a match best eight saves for Southeast. The Redhawks head to Chicago on Sept. 8 to face DePaul at 4 p.m., before coming back home to Houck Stadium to face Troy on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. |
