Southeast Soccer Faces Two Tough Foes

Sept. 15, 2005

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Off to a 3-1 start and fresh from an 11-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Southeast Missouri State University women's soccer team will play at Evansville on Friday, 7 p.m., and then return to Houck Stadium to host Iowa of the Big 10 on Sunday, 2 p.m.

"Both Evansville and Iowa should be teams that will be very competitive with our team," said Southeast coach Heather Nelson. "I expect the matches to very tight with low scoring."

Evansville is 4-2 going into Friday night's match. The Purple Aces include several players from the St. Louis area. "We know a lot of their players," Nelson said. "I coached Julie Winkler this summer when we were both involved with a team of some of the top players in Missouri

"We need to slow down their top scorer and one of our overall goals this weekend will be to concentrate on doing a better job of defending in central midfield."

Iowa will enter Sunday's contest with a record of 1-4-1. The Iowa win was over Air Force with a tie against Oklahoma State. The Hawkeyes have losses to Colorado College, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Missouri.

"Iowa head coach Carla Baker is a friend of mine from when we were both playing for the Canadian National Team back in the 1980's," Nelson said. Iowa plays in a very tough conference and I know they will come in here expecting to win. It should be a great match."

Southeast will be led by true freshman forward Casey Kraft who was selected as last week's OVC Soccer Player of the Week. She had 10 points in the win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff with three goals and four assists.
